Meet Our Dean of Education

When it comes to educating our artists, Juut has the best of the best! Meet our beloved Dean of Education, Andi Tarte! She not only has worldly experience, but has been everything from a floral designer to chicken flinger!!

1. When you were little, what did you want to be?
I went to a Catholic school so I wanted to be a Nun.  Then I realized that was just because I wanted to wear all black . . . so I became a hairdresser instead!

2. Where did you go to college? What did you study? Is there something you wish you had studied instead?
I went to college in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.  I began college with a plan to major in journalism but had one REALLY awful professor who turned me off of the program.  Then I changed my major to music but quickly realized I didn’t know what I would do with a music major. So, I switched my major for a final time to business. If I had to re-create myself – my dream job would be doing the weather on TV!  I am obsessed with the weather. You can ask me anytime – I will always know the forecast.  I would love to do the morning broadcast. I naturally get up really early in the morning so getting to work at 4am and telling you what weather you could expect for the day would be AWESOME!!!

3. What was your first job out of school? What did you think of it?
My very first job (while in high school) was at Kentucky Fried Chicken.  After about 1 month of working there, the owner came to me and said that I was doing such a good job he was going to give me a raise -  five cents an hour!!  I said, “That’s OK, I’ll just eat more chicken.”  He said it was better for him to just give me the nickel - little did I know, he probably saved my life (from all that grease, etc.)!

4. How did you get into the beauty industry?
I went to cosmetology school in Dallas, TX.  After school in Dallas, I joined a salon of British hairdressers where I apprenticed for a year to be a Stylist.  This was old school assisting – I was a human clippie and if I handed my Stylist the wrong comb, he would throw it across the room.  His goal was to make me cry – but he never did – at least not that he knew! I was two weeks from going on the floor as a Stylist but had seen some of the most amazing and inspiring hair color work by the Color Director during m y apprenticeship.   At the last minute, I changed my mind and decided to be a Colorist, which meant I apprenticed for another two years - I have never regretted that decision! A Colorist was definitely where I was supposed to start and the education I received was phenomenal.  At that time in Texas, everyone wanted big, blonde hair, so I became a bleach master!

5. We’ve heard you worked a lot with Horst in the past. What was your first experience like? What did you learn?
Horst hired me as the Technical Director of Horst & Friends Salons in 1987.  At that time, Aveda didn’t have its own color line but we did do a lot of Aveda perms.  For the first two years, Horst didn’t remember my name.  I was known as the “Perm Woman.”  I was part of the Aveda Creative Team and traveled around the country doing hair shows with Horst.  During the week I taught perm and color classes in the salons, took guests offering color and perm services, and every weekend was in a different city with the team doing a show.  This is where I learned to stretch my creativity, expand my techniques, and evolve my presentation skills.  It was intense but a lot of fun!

6. We heard you have had many interesting positions in and out of the beauty industry. Can you list them all? And comment on a few of your favorites/ least favorites?

· Chicken flinger at KFC
· Soda Jerk at a small town drug store

· Secretary
· Color/Perm Specialist in Texas
· Technical Director for Horst & Friends Salons - During this time I worked on photo shoots, was a guest artist at a few of the major hair color shows, and taught classes all over the country.
· Global Trainer for Aveda – I traveled nationally and internationally teaching perm and color classes.  I also ran the Aveda Test Salon in Blaine and worked closely with Research & Development.  This was when Aveda was just starting to develop their own color line.

· Education Director for Aveda London – This was when Aveda was starting up in Europe.  For two
years I lived in London and trained new salons on the Aveda products.  I also worked with other European distributors and traveled to Italy, Germany, Ireland, and the Netherlands teaching Aveda classes.  This was an amazing opportunity and so much fun.  I had always had a goal of living and working in London – it took 10 years to get there but I am a firm believer that when you set goals and work toward them everyday (and have patience) you will get there!!!
· Floral Designer – Before I returned from London, I trained with one of the top floral designers there.  It was something I always wanted to do.  Surprisingly, floral design isn’t all that different from hair – just a different medium.  You are still working with shape, design, balance, texture, color, etc.  I worked as a designer for a couple of years.  To this day my home is never without fresh flowers and I love to garden.  And I will add that Brides can be just as emotional about their wedding flowers as they can about their wedding updos!
· Minnesota Public Radio – I worked in marketing for MPR, which I kind of fell into.  It was very interesting but certainly not my passion.  I really missed the hair industry.

7. Tell us your Juut story.
After MPR I was fortunate to come back to Juut (formerly Horst & Friends).  I re-joined the salons as Technical Director.  As the years progressed I played in a number of different roles such as Education Director, HR Director,  and Operations Director.  What I love about David and about Juut is the commitment to see people right.  I was thrilled to experience all of these different roles but my true love, my real passion has always been education.  A number of years ago I shifted back into education in my current role of Dean of Education with Juut, which is a perfect fit!

8. What’s your favorite part of being the Dean of Education at Juut?
What I love about my job at Juut is that I am surrounded by talented, passionate people who love what they do! We are so blessed to be in such an amazing environment.  Most people search their whole life for a job they can love, a passionate career.  I love holding the space for our talented staff to share what they know with others and bring in talent that inspires them.

9. What is your Mantra?
I have had two Mantras for the past 20 years . . .”Never Say Never” and “Never Say . . . What If.” These Mantras have always pushed me to take risks and try new opportunities.

AVEDA BEAUTIFYING COMPOSITION

What is it?
Aveda Beautifying Composition is an amazing oil used to replenish skin, hair, and nails. It's most effective right after bathing to lock in skin’s moisture. For best results, blend with a moisturizer for body, or apply alone on skin, hair, scalp or nails.  For added moisture, apply Beautifying Composition at night to hair and scalp to lock in moisture. When you wash out in the morning your hair will be soft and beautiful.

Why do we love it?
Not only do we love this oil for its many multipurpose uses, but also the jojoba oil includes fragrant essences, including rosemary and bergamot.

Bonus!
After being out of stock at Juut for some time, we were able to replenish our shelves with Beautifying Composition just in time for those cold, dry winter months (out of stock on Aveda.com). Hurry in before it's gone!!

AVEDA CAMOMILE COLOR SHAMPOO
What is it?
This Aveda shampoo is packed with organically grown camomile that naturally enhances your blonde locks – natural or otherwise. Organic camomile is known for its soothing nourishing properties.

Why do we love it?
When you’re not spending as much time outside this winter you aren’t getting those natural—not to mention free—highlights from the sun. Chamomile shampoo solves the sun-less winter problem by naturally brightening and illuminating your hair.
